High Rising School Spotlight – Clarendon School
At High Rising Schools of Phoenix, we are a proud supporter of Clarendon School, which is part of the Osborn School District and invests in promoting achievements in every student.
Who is Clarendon?
Clarendon School is an elementary school in the Osborn School District #8 situated adjacent to the Central Avenue Corridor of Phoenix, Arizona. Clarendon takes advantage of their unique 4th- through 6th-grade span to ensure continuous academic achievement and character development for every student, every day. The school taps into the hopefulness of this age group and empowers them to act strategically to attain their goals. The faculty and staff expect each student to accept responsibility for their own success and carefully plan opportunities for them to do so-with their learning, relationships, and behavior.
Clarendon opened its doors on Valentine’s Day in 1954, fitting for the amount of love they have for their students, staff, families, and the community. The beautifully landscaped courtyard is surrounded by ceramic tile murals created by their children through Artists in Residence programs. The artwork in the front entry, “Hello” features nine different languages, which creates a warm and welcoming first impression for their diverse learners and their families.
Excellence in Education
Once on campus, you will quickly identify why Clarendon is a multiple (2009 and 2017) A+ School of Excellence and A+ Exemplary Program Award (2010) recipient for their Dual Language Program. In addition, Ruth Ruiz, a 6th-grade Dual Language Spanish teacher, was recognized as one of the top 10 “Arizona Teacher of the Year” finalists in 2018. High recognition is due to their commitment to every student, every day. As a number one goal, they ensure that each child reaches their fullest potential academically, emotionally, and socially.
Their award-winning Dual Language programs bring children throughout the Valley to Clarendon. Students do not just learn another language but become bi-literate by receiving 50% of all content in Spanish, requiring students to read and write at high levels. Clarendon’s Dual Language program is earning 69% of 6th-grade dual language students’ high school credit before even moving on to Osborn Middle School
Looking to the Future
The two big initiatives for this year are providing students with the opportunity to engage in 21st Century learning and social-emotional learning (SEL). A focus on Conscious Discipline (CD) has led to the schools’ students learning the skills necessary to be safe not just physically but emotionally. The dedication of their cougar family has significantly reduced suspensions and increased the amount of time students are engaged in learning inside the classroom. Clarendon students have 1-to-1 technology as well as attend STEM and technology classes to further develop their 21st Century skills.
Clarendon is committed to ensuring that students are taking risks to problem solve, which they can accomplish through engaging in engineering projects, programming, and a variety of technology skills. To sum it up, the dedication of every member of the Clarendon community ensures that students have the support and tools necessary to reach their fullest potential. This is done through teamwork, collaboration, and taking care of each other every day. Clarendon is not just a school – they are a Cougar Family!
